Create an Internet Meme to Generate Blog Traffic

Sometimes it doesn’t seem fair that a long, well-researched, and elegantly written blog article doesn’t get picked up by other sites or doesn’t receive many comments. Posting social media buttons, spamming your friends for input, and joining a blog community are things that will only get you so far. If you want your blog to soar out of the park, you’re going to need to come up with something that instantly draws people in. You will need to enter the world of Internet memes in order to draw visitors, build links, and attract advertisers.

Creating a classic Internet meme has been a time honored tradition for bloggers since the beginning of the medium. If Internet searchers want information, they are going to go to the top tier websites and news organizations for professionally written pieces and cutting edge videos. Your primary role on the Internet is to provide people with opinions, tips, and humor. Internet memes have successfully captured the attention of Internet users all over the world. Here are some effective ways to get your idea rolling:

Keep it Cute

One of the most popular memes of all time has been the LOLcatz trend that took the Internet community by storm. Today you can’t log onto Facebook without seeing a cute little cat with a funny, misspelled caption slapped on it. People are drawn to these memes because they are cute, safe for work, and relatable to humans. Cheezeburger owner and blogger Ben Huh recently did an interview with PC World where he claims to have picked kittens because they are anthropomorphic and have strong facial features.

Make sure your meme has a kernel of truth that draws on people’s hearts before picking something that doesn’t promote your website in the wrong way.

Use them Like an Advertiser or PR Pro

Just like you wouldn’t post an article about finance on a comedy blog, don’t post a hilarious Internet meme on a serious business website. If your aim is satire, it might be appropriate to post a biting political stab on a political website. Think of internet memes as marketing tools that generate buzz for your number one product, your website.  According to Wikipedia, the movie Snakes on a Plane started as an Internet meme and then went on to become a major Hollywood release.

StumbleUpon

The StumbleUpon toolbar is an excellent way to get random people to your website. When people are using this web based random search button, they want quick and succinct content they do not have to think about for too long. Think of StumbleUpon as the online surveys software that visitors use to rate your content. The judging is harsh and quick and your meme can become a star or just fall flat with people. If you have a good meme make sure you have a website to back it up. Have easy navigation, a header

Use a Meme Builder

You do not need the latest version of Photoshop, or any graphic design skills, to create a popular meme. There are websites like Rage Comics and Cheezburger that have meme generators already set up for you to use. You can pick from already built animations, pre-picked photographs, and custom fonts in order to make the most out of your meme.

The hardest part about generating memes is actually coming up with one. If you have a solid idea for a funny meme, don’t be afraid to post it immediately. The Internet was built on trial and error. While you might start a flame war with a controversial meme, make sure to always keep a clear and open line of communication with your blog visitors.

  1. writing some breaking news defiantly creates an internet meme, but you have to cover the news at first before others. The drawback is, traffic is only for few days and it won’t work for long-term.

    • But at times, we search for old news. Even if you write about something which is hot news today and you get a lot of traffic (preferably organic) and a lot of backlinks and then after a month it gets old, your site may come higher in the search engines for similar keywords. Thats how the search engines work.
